Whilst Leonardo da Vinci was busying himself with the first sketches of the Mona Lisa in Florence, the citizens of a distressed town between Mainz and Strasbourg were updating their defences.  The town wall defending these folk was needed for pride as well as defence.  This region had seen much violence, land grabbing and empire building - and worse was to come.  Around 1500 work began on fortifications that would result in a wall of significant height with an outer ditch, nine whole towers and five half-towers; Pfeddersheim had made a statement.  One of these towers, the Sprenger Turm, has become an emblem of a proud town with a surprising history.  Its Riesling wine is celebrated around the world.  One vineyard has been producing wine for as long as the Turm has stood - its distinctive features recognisable from contemporary documents. During the German Peasants' War, the town’s citizens showed solidarity with the farmers, which led to, in 1525, the Battle of Pfeddersheim – although “slaughter” might be a better description. The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) devastated entire regions of Germany with armies being provisioned along the Roman lines “The war will feed itself”; in other words, the armies plundered as they fought.    Over the war’s 30 year duration between eight  and twelve million people were killed – 20-30% of Germany’s entire population; regionally this figure doubled. During the prelude to the the following Nine Years’ War (1689-1698) Pfeddersheim was on the shifting border between Alsace and Franconia.  In the toing-and-froing of this war - also know as the War of Palatine Succession - the citizens of Pfeddersheim kept a low-profile trying to minimise any further destruction. The town’s name probably derives from a Roman settlement “Paternus Villa”.
